Sambalpuri Saree is a traditional handwoven ikat saree where tie dye yarn are used to produce designs on the fabrics. There are different types of Sambalpuri tie dye sarees i.e. Cotton Saree, Silk Saree, Silk Cotton mixed sarees and Sambalpuri “Saktapar” Saree. There are two types of Ikat sarees. One is single Ikat where the cloth is woven with tie dye design either on warp or weft. Other tie dye saree is double ikat where the sarees are woven with tie dye design on both warp and weft. Sambalpuri Sarees are known for their traditional motifs like fish, conch shell, birds, animals, flowers, temple, portrait of mythology, sceneries which are developed in the saree with tie dye technique and rudrakshya bead design in the boarder. Sambalpuri Sarees are mainly produced by the weavers of different districts of western Odisha like Bargarh, Sambalpur, Bolangir, Sonepur, Kalahandi, Nuapada, Sundergarh and Boudh districts. Weavers of different weavers concentrated villages like Sonepur, Sagarpali, Binka, Kendupali, Nimna, Bausuni, manamunda, Barpali, Bandhapali, Jhiliminda, Singhpali, Lurupali, Sarkanda, Khuntpali, Bhatli, Sinapali, chicheiguda, sarmuhan, loisingha etc. are the important villages where Sambalpuri tie dye saree/ fabrics are woven by the weavers. The weavers of western Odisha producing Sambalpuri Cotton Silk sarees have good demand in the market. The weavers are supplying their woven sarees to Primary Weaver Co-operative Societies, SHGs, Master Weavers and sold to local customers.
